Rebalance Book Club: Our Favorites Reads for the Fall

We get a lot of questions from patients about the books we recommend to learn more about topics such as healthy living, mindfulness and recipes. Here’s a list of some of our favorite books:

Our Favorite Books for Mindfulness

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra

Hina: This book has simple habits to keep in mind throughout your day. They can help you find success in any part of your life, whether its your health/body, family life or career. I find it very helpful in my own life – it’s very grounding and helps me find balance. It’s also nice to have a reminder of the things that are really important in life.

The Mindful Athlete: Secrets to Pure Performance by George Mumford

Stephanie: This book focuses on mindfulness, but I think connecting it to athletics and performance makes it more relatable.

The book is written by George Mumford, a former college athlete who has worked with many NBA stars on mindfulness techniques and strategies for focus. The techniques discussed in the book work for everyone working toward a goal, whether you’re an executive or an artist.

Our Favorite Cookbooks

The Longevity Kitchen by Rebecca Katz

Stephanie: I like Rebecca’s cookbooks because she balances taste and nutrition. In the beginning of each book, she reviews the nutritional properties of food as the focus of the book. The recipes are not just good for you, but they help you to enjoy eating healthy food.

In the book, Rebecca looks at different systems in the body. She then pairs these systems to food to show how we eat can help each of their functions. This cookbook addresses cardiovascular, nerve, hormone, bone, muscle or immunity issues, among others. It takes foods from A to Z and breaks them down in a “pharmacy” fashion to help you understand their healing properties. At the same time, Katz tries to help you identify your culinary likes and how to use what you like to overcome any resistance you have to eating well.

Our Favorite Books for Healthy Living

The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution, Aviva Romm

Stephanie: My patients hear this one endlessly! This book explains how conditions like weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, hormonal imbalances and autoimmune conditions are connected by something called Survival Overdrive Syndrome, a condition that occurs when the body becomes overloaded. The adrenal system and the thyroid are often most affected and can lead to other illnesses and symptoms. Often, the symptoms/conditions are treated individually by various specialists instead of getting to the root of the problem.

The book explains how to reset your system using diet and healthy habits. It’s a great introduction to all the ways that your diet and lifestyle are connected to your health.
